Well, I know that I would rather be over the hill than under it, and I hope you feel the same :-)
Once my aunt hit 50, I remember her telling me that it was the best time of her life. At the time, I looked at her as if she had two heads and didn’t say a word.
Since then, I’ve learned that raising a family, keeping a job, buying a home, and all the other things that go with being a responsible adult were not easy at all, and that at 50, you had been able to leave all of that behind!
So, now is your time to lie back, relax, and enjoy your family and friends in a very different way.
I would ask you, as I always do, to sit down for a minute and think of those great times you had with your loved one who is turning 50. Reflect on her/his life and try to find something very special about that person at this particular milestone. How did this person contribute to the world around you, or what have family and friends learned from this person?
"It is better to be a little light, than a huge shadow!"
"A good, long
life is measured by experiences and cognition, and not by years."
As I said before, we all like to read something personal on our Birthday Cards, not just generic words written by a total stranger. Try to spice it up with some memories that will bring a smile to your loved one’s face.
Remember when we were young and thought that time would last forever? Somehow, we thought that only other people aged :-) . A long time ago when we were kids, we made a promise to stay childlike forever – to laugh and run freely in the fields, on the mountains, and chase the end of the rainbow.
It looks like we forgot about our promises, so let me remind you of them today, and let’s make a date to do just that - be kids again!
I always admired your bravery. Life was not easy for you when you were young, and I truly hope that this next part of your life will be happier. I just wanted to let you know that watching you struggle was very difficult for me, but the way you dealt with problems taught me a big lesson, and I thank you for that. Enjoy your life as much as I enjoy your company.
Being 50 is still much nicer than being 80, but I guess you will learn more about that once you hit 90 and still wish you were 80 :-). Today, on your birthday, I would like to wish that you live to celebrate your “second” 50th birthday, but remember when, on your 30th birthday, I said: ”I wish you to live at least a hundred years”? You said, “Why would you put any limitations on my life? So, I decided not to :-)
My dear friend (wife, husband, sister etc...), I wish for you to live as long as you wish!
Remember that story we read together about the husband and wife? She was 15 years older than he, and everyone thought the marriage wouldn’t last long. They were madly in love and would not listen to anyone’s advice or opinions, and yes, they lived happily ever after. One day, when she was close to her 90th birthday, she asked him, ”Darling, I was always afraid to ask, but please tell me now, how did you feel about me growing older all these years? How did you feel about my wrinkles and my body getting old?” His reply was short: ”I never noticed!” So darling, I just wanted to remind you that you don’t ever have to worry about growing old with me. You are forever my most beautiful little princess. I wish for you to always remember that.
Do you remember when we were went hiking in the Rocky Mountains years ago? We met a wonderful farming couple – their faces were sunburned and their hands were full of blisters. They seemed happy and so much in love and left a great impression on us. They talked to each other with a lot of respect and in a kind, warm way. She was shy, but he talked a lot, and after a few glasses of their home-brewed wine, he confided in us while she was outside tending to the animals: “Every night when we go to bed, my wife puts her head on my chest. She explained once to me why she does that. She said, ‘I can’t get enough of your fragrance - it feels as if your soul is here, and I can smell it.’”
I guess that was the moment when we realized that not only young, beautiful, city people know the meaning of true love. She taught me where to search for the warmness of your soul and the beauty of your heart, and that is why I never fall asleep before I place my head on your chest.
Today, you are turning 50, my darling, and you are more handsome and wonderful to me than ever. I wish for you that your soul and heart never age.
Happy Birthday My Love!
